Stop Lobbying to Be Bawumia’s Running Mate; It’s Disrespectful – Ursula Owusu-Ekuful on Accra-Based Citi FM

In a recent interview on Accra-based Citi FM, Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful made a strong appeal to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to cease lobbying for the position of running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s newly confirmed flagbearer for the upcoming presidential elections. Owusu-Ekuful described the lobbying efforts as disrespectful and potentially divisive.

During her appearance on the popular morning show, Owusu-Ekuful emphasized the importance of unity within the party, urging members to focus on supporting Dr. Bawumia and the party’s broader objectives. “It is premature and disrespectful for individuals to lobby for the running mate position at this time. Our focus should be on building a strong, united front to ensure victory in the upcoming elections,” she stated.

Dr. Bawumia, who recently secured the NPP flagbearer position, is widely recognized for his economic acumen and leadership skills. However, discussions about his potential running mate have already begun to surface, leading to increased speculation and behind-the-scenes maneuvering within the party.

Owusu-Ekuful criticized these early lobbying efforts, calling for a more disciplined and respectful approach to the selection process. “The decision on who will be the running mate should be made based on strategic considerations and the overall benefit to the party and the nation. Engaging in lobbying at this stage only serves to create unnecessary tension and distract from our primary goal,” she explained.

She further highlighted the importance of adhering to the party’s formal procedures for selecting candidates. “The NPP has established processes and structures to guide us in these important decisions. We must respect these processes and allow them to work as intended, rather than letting individual ambitions take precedence,” Owusu-Ekuful added.

Her comments come at a crucial time for the NPP, as the party prepares for the 2024 general elections. With Dr. Bawumia now confirmed as the flagbearer, the choice of running mate will be critical in shaping the party’s electoral strategy and appeal to a broad spectrum of voters.

Several NPP members and political analysts have echoed Owusu-Ekuful’s sentiments, noting that premature lobbying could undermine the party’s cohesion. “Ursula’s call for restraint is timely and necessary. The focus should be on supporting Dr. Bawumia and ensuring we present a united front to the electorate,” commented John Ntim, an NPP strategist.

In the wake of Owusu-Ekuful’s interview, many within the party have expressed support for her stance. “It’s essential that we approach the running mate selection with maturity and respect. Ursula is right; this is not the time for personal ambition but for collective effort,” said Sarah Mensah, an NPP grassroots organizer.

As the NPP moves forward with its preparations for the 2024 elections, Owusu-Ekuful’s appeal for unity and discipline serves as a reminder of the importance of putting the party’s collective interests above individual aspirations. The party’s ability to navigate these internal dynamics effectively will be crucial in its quest to secure another term in office.
