Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on Ghanaians to refrain from voting for former President John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming elections, citing concerns over Mahama’s accountability during his previous tenure. Bawumia made these remarks during a campaign event in Kumasi on Saturday, aiming to highlight what he described as Mahama’s track record of poor governance and lack of transparency.
Addressing a crowd of enthusiastic supporters, Bawumia emphasized the importance of accountability and effective leadership in driving the nation forward. “We cannot afford to go back to the days of mismanagement and lack of accountability. John Mahama had his chance and failed to deliver the transparency and responsible governance that Ghanaians deserve,” Bawumia asserted.
The Vice President pointed to several instances during Mahama’s presidency where he believes there was a lack of fiscal responsibility and transparency. He cited examples such as the handling of major infrastructure projects and allegations of corruption that plagued Mahama’s administration. “Under Mahama’s leadership, we saw numerous projects shrouded in secrecy and questionable financial practices that did not benefit the ordinary Ghanaian,” he claimed.
Bawumia urged voters to consider the current government’s efforts to improve governance and economic stability. “Our administration has made significant strides in restoring economic growth, reducing inflation, and implementing social interventions that directly benefit the people. We are committed to building a better Ghana, one that is accountable and transparent,” he said.
He also highlighted the government’s initiatives in digitalization, healthcare, and education, presenting them as evidence of the current administration’s dedication to progress and innovation. “We are not perfect, but we are working tirelessly to create a Ghana where every citizen can thrive. We need your support to continue this journey towards a prosperous future,” Bawumia added.
The Vice President’s comments have stirred reactions across the political spectrum. Supporters of the ruling party have echoed his sentiments, arguing that Mahama’s return to power would be detrimental to the nation’s progress. However, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed Bawumia’s claims, defending Mahama’s record and accusing the current administration of failing to address key issues such as unemployment and corruption within its ranks.
In a swift response, the NDC’s Communications Director, Sammy Gyamfi, described Bawumia’s statements as baseless and politically motivated. “John Mahama is a leader with a proven track record of significant achievements, including infrastructure development and social programs that have improved the lives of many Ghanaians. The current administration should focus on its shortcomings rather than resorting to unfounded attacks,” Gyamfi retorted.
As the election campaign heats up, both parties are intensifying their efforts to sway voters. Bawumia’s appeal underscores the high stakes of the upcoming elections, with accountability and governance emerging as central themes in the political discourse.
